What to know

When

July 1, 2027. That's the first day licensed stores in Virginia can sell to adults. Possession has been legal since 2021, but there's never been a legal place to buy. That's what changes.

Who

21 and over. Bring a real government ID. Every visit, no exceptions. That's the law, not us being difficult.

How much per visit

Flower	2 ounces
Concentrate	8 grams
Edibles	800 mg THC total

How much you can have on you

One ounce right now. Two ounces starting July 1, 2027.

Where you can use it

Private property. Not in public, that's a $250 fine starting July 2027. Not in a car, driving high is a DUI. Not on federal land, including the beach past the high-tide line and any military base.

What it'll cost at the register

6% state cannabis tax, plus a local tax of 1% to 3.5% depending on the city, plus regular sales tax. Figure roughly 12% to 15% on top of the price tag. The state tax goes up to 8% in 2029.

Packaging

Everything comes child-resistant and labeled with THC content. No shapes that look like candy or cartoon characters. Keep it away from kids and pets.

Taking it out of state

Don't. Cannabis is still illegal federally, so crossing any state line with it is a federal issue. North Carolina is still a prohibition state.

Growing your own

Up to four plants per household, out of public view. That's been legal since 2021 and doesn't change.
